The doco is done!

Awright, here's the finished doco... finally! Thanks to the four interviewees, who were uniformly awesome...

THE JOY OF ANIMATING

Awright, so things have taken a turn...

Tropfest is on hold. Now, as part of my Education studies, I am about to start work on a short documentary called THE JOY OF ANIMATION.

My fellow filmmakers (I'm working with 3 other QUT students) and I don't want it to be a "how-to-do-it" film or an industry overview... we just want to profile some talented and passionate animators talking about why they love what they do.

We'll be interviewing 4 professional animators and asking them to talk about their passion for the medium. And we're using a framing device to tie it all together... a sad, lonely animated boy named Naylor, who begins by asking the age old questions: "Where did I come from... and why am I here?"

WELCOME TO MY BLOG

I'll try to be concise...

I am a teacher in the Animation Department at the Southbank Institute of Technology. I'm overseeing my 2nd year students as they develop ideas for short narrative films. They'll have made an animatic (that is, a moving storyboard with a rough soundtrack) by April. After that, they can either develop the animatic into a finished film by November, or abandon it and make a showreel instead. They will chronicle their creative progress in their blogs.

While they are busy conceptualising, I think it's only fair that I share their pain. To that end, I'm going to be developing my own narrative ideas in this blog. I want to enter a film into the next Tropfest competition, and so... why wait? If I get started now, I might even get it finished in time!
